======> The following post is by   MCM; Dog days of summer and portfolio management -

The last warm days of summer are great for reading at the beach. For me, it is very customary to take summer vacations away from the usual daily grind for a few weeks. Sometimes I even take a couple of these vacation breaks during the summer and winter, it really clears my head, gives me a good opportunity to have one-on-one time with family & friends.

Specifically during the past 35-years I also take extended breaks away (weeks, even months) from intra-day Stock Market trading. We all know how stressful it can be.

This summers performance of my intra-day trading portfolio was not at all stellar for me, and I really question whether the risk (and stress) versus reward was worth it. Going forward from the end of summer into the fall (we all fear the September - October stock market cycles) my sense is that intra-day trading will continue to be very challenging with volatile extreme intra-day swings, while investing in the stock markets even more difficult, investing might resemble casino bets, more than ever before.

This summers performance of my long-term investment portfolio was about as expected, and probably will be stable for a few more years, assuming that the FDIC continues to perform at its excellent level of responsibility, and the Banks in receivership begin to reduce. However, the monthly cash-flow yield from the fixed-income category of this portfolio will be difficult to match going forward after the next decade, since I allocate over 80% of this category to FDIC Bank CDs (10 year plus maturities) and replacement CD purchases nowadays are almost half of the yield I was securing just a few years ago. Therefore, I will need to add a bit more risk to this portfolio and allocate a bit more capital into equity high-yield bonds, bond-funds, bond-etfs, reits, and dividend paying stocks. This is definitely not my preference, since I would rather allocate to FDIC Bank CDs, I think the FDIC has maintained an excellent focus on guaranteeing principal and delivering cash-flow of failed banks.

As we all do; I have some very strong opinions about the overall US & Global economy, which I will keep private. But as I have stated publicly here in the community various times, we must begin using Common Sense and I believe investing and trading must be accomplished with much better refined risk versus reward metrics, and focus on the preservation of capital. I don't think that it is only my personal perception that the stock markets behavior is very fishy.

On August 10, 2010, the FDIC Board of Directors adopted the attached final rule amending its insurance regulations (12 C.F.R. Part 330) and advertising regulations (12 C.F.R. Part 328) to conform with provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which permanently increased the standard maximum deposit insurance amount (SMDIA) from $100,000 to $250,000. This permanent increase in the SMDIA became effective July 22, 2010.

Columbia River Bank (Oregon) gets FDIC order -

The temporary increase of FDIC insurance coverage to $250,000 for all insurable capacities has been extended through December 31, 2013. If not further extended, FDIC coverage will revert to $100,000 on January 1, 2014 for all insurable capacities except IRAs and certain other self-directed retirement accounts and plans. Unless the increased coverage is extended, deposit insurance coverage for CDs with a maturity date after December 31, 2013 will revert to the prior FDIC coverage on January 1, 2014, regardless of when you purchased the CD. You should not rely on a possible extension of this increased coverage in purchasing CDs. The FDIC considers any other deposits you may have with an issuing bank. CDs you purchase from a particular bank are aggregated with any other deposits you may have with the issuing bank for determining FDIC insurance coverage (e.g., if you already have deposits of $250,000 with a bank, don't purchase CDs from the same bank in the same ownership category). Because the deposit insurance rules are complex, you may want to use FDIC?s online tool, Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE), to estimate your total coverage at any particular bank.

New Deposit Insurance Limits ? Congress has temporarily increased FDIC deposit insurance from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through December 31, 2013. On January 1, 2014, the standard insurance amount will return to $100,000 per depositor for all account categories except IRAs and other certain retirement accounts, which will remain at $250,000 per depositor. Celebrate Social Security's 75th Anniversary - For 75 years, Social Security has allowed older Americans to live with pride and independence in their own homes. It's put new clothes on the children of injured factory works, and dinner on the table of families who lost a parent. It's been a sacred promise to millions of Americans. As we celebrate this important date, it seems like all the talk in Washington is about budget cuts and numbers, not the people who rely on Social Security every day. But we know Social Security is more than a figure on a balance sheet. That's why today, the 75th anniversary of Social Security, Congress needs to hear from you -
